My own true love, farewell for a while

Nina woke with a start. Her hand flew to the bed next to her, but it was empty. She sat there for a long moment, calming her heart as she listened. She couldn't hear Geralt moving around downstairs in the cabin's kitchen. Had he gone out early for something? She consoled herself with that thought as she eased out of bed and wrapped herself in a robe.

She watched the clouds race across the heavy, overcast sky, rushed along by the winds blowing. She couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right, and after being awake for a while, she tried calling Geralt. He hated his phone, but he'd learned how to use it and it was, sometimes, the easiest way to find him.

This number has been disconnected, a tinny voice told her on the other end of the line.

Everything in Nina went numb. She dropped her phone and gripped the kitchen table. She didn't know how long she stood there, just breathing with tears stinging her eyes. Eventually, she forced herself to move. Trembling, she dressed herself and put on her shoes. She grabbed her phone, her coat, and went out into the sharp, windy day. At first she didn't know where she was going as she strode through the woods in her sweeping red coat. But she walked through the forest, and into the rolling suburbs, and finally into the city itself. She didn't stop until she reached Dimera.

Nina pounded on the door, eyes red from tears and disheveled from her walk.

Nina stood outside the apartment door for far too long, staring at it. She was being a coward and she didn't know why. Maybe because some part of her was afraid that Inej would disapprove, or judge her, or--

She didn't know. But Inej was her best friend, and somehow she was the hardest person to tell. Her opinion would mean the most.

Finally she made herself knock and put on a smile. No need to be grim when Inej answered the door. At least she was certain that Kaz wasn't home. She didn't need him hearing this before she told Geralt.

Nina was feeling.. festive. Or she wanted to. The weather had finally turned again after a brief heat wave and the nights were chilly and the days were crisp. She could smell woodsmoke and dying leaves and it was absolutely wonderful.

So she called in Inej, hoping to gently root her out. She asked the Suli girl to meet her at a craft store in town - she had plans to make something from home, and maybe Inej was Suli first and Ravkan by chance, but Nina wanted to make something for her, too.

Despite harboring a lingering anger for the way Inej had broken into her apartment to make a point to Geralt, she did smile when she saw her friend.

"I'm going to make flower crowns," she announced happily. "And I need you to make sure I don't spend all of my money."
