Oct. 30th, 2026 06:01 pm“I've decided to call this one Ladle,” she announces, holding up a fluffy, roly-poly puppy with purple-painted claws. “Regan says shelters name their animals weird names to make them easier to track in their systems. That way they don't have seventy-five ‘Spots’ and one-thousand ‘Fidos’.”
She's talking to her phone, which is clipped to the top of a wire playpen that she's set up in the park. Around her, on a square quilt and playing in the grass beside the quilt, are four puppies that are nearly identical.
About three months ago, Cu had gone off for a few hours. Saoirse hadn't loved that, with all the creepy things Darrow could do, but his license still existed on the Darrow city hall website every time she checked, so it wasn't like he'd vanished. (She's not even sure if pets can disappear the way people do, actually.) And then once he'd come home, she hadn't thought much about it.
Until five weeks ago, when one of her neighbors walked up with their own sheepdog, looking a little… well, ‘heavy in the chest,’ is how she put it when she made the announcement on her suddengram live. The neighbor, a grumpy woman named Delilah, had shown Saoirse a photo of four sheepdog puppies, small and wet and looking a bit like gray and white potatoes.
“You're the only family with a sheepdog for miles!” she'd snapped when Saoirse had laughed off the idea that Cu could be the father. The problem was, she's right.
Delilah isn't a cruel woman, though, so she'd agreed to at least keep them with their mother until they were old enough, on the condition that Saoirse clean up after them, buy their supplies, pay for their vet care, and then take them off Delilah’s hands once they've been weaned.
Now, Saoirse's got all four of them, and she's livestreaming a puppy-safe nail salon while she talks about the surprising hidden costs of puppy care — “it's more expensive than you'd think!”
Lifting the freshly dubbed Ladle to the camera, Saoirse snuggles the puppy's shoulder and face and says, “Say hi, Ladle!” She giggles when the puppy licks her cheek and gnaws on her hair. “Isn't he so cute?”
[ catch Saoirse in Petros Park with four new puppies in the park! Overhear her, crash her livestream, or just come over bc PUPPIES. Yes, she's painting their nails, and yes, she's made sure it's safe! But there's no reason your pup needs to know that XD Also, if you know her, you probably know it's her BIRTHDAY! Happy sweet sixteen, Saoirse! ]
